MUSIC BLOG- Maisie Peters Live Stream

Not many people can perform flawlessly on little to no sleep, but that is exactly what Maisie Peters did on Wednesday morning. While tuning her guitar in her student house, Maisie’s down-to-earth nature shines through as she laughs about only having three braincells left after staying up the night before to catch the US Election coverage.

To begin, Maisie treats us to a haunting rendition of ‘There Will Be No Divorce’ by The Mountain Goats, taken from their 2000 album The Coroner’s Gambit. The song was supposedly written by member John Darnielle about his wife, and was one of his favourite songs from that album.

This performance is followed by a stripped-back version of Maisie’s newest single, ‘Maybe Don’t’. The song describes the contrasting feelings in a relationship and is Maisie’s first outing since heartbreak anthem ‘Sad Girl Summer’ was released back in July. The track, which features Canadian singer-songwriter JP Saxe, was recorded before lockdown in London with help from GRAMMY-winning writer and producer Joe Rubel.

Maisie describes her music style as ‘emo girl pop’ and names her female pop influences as Lily Allen, Sara Bareilles and Taylor Swift. She goes further to say she would happily make a ‘sad acoustic guitar supergroup’ with Sigrid, Phoebe Bridgers and Jensen McRae. Also an ABBA superfan, Maisie can effortlessly choose an ABBA song for every season (Winter is apparently ‘The Winner Takes It All’, while Summer is ‘My Love My Life’).

The last two years have been particularly impressive for Maisie. In the summer of 2019, her fanbase increased significantly when two of her emotive singles (‘Favourite Ex’ and ‘Feels Like This’) were played on ITV2’s Love Island. What’s more, at the beginning of this year her track ‘Smile’ featured on the soundtrack of ‘Birds of Prey’, the Suicide Squad spin-off film based on the DC Comic. To top it all off, in November of last year, she played at the iconic O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, which she describes as her favourite concert to date.

Like many artists, Maisie’s work has been greatly affected due to COVID-19. As a result, she has done the majority of her music from home this year. However, as someone who started out singing covers on YouTube, she tells us she is more than comfortable performing online and engaging with fans on social media. Even at the height of lockdown in April, Maisie managed to stay productive by launching the ‘MP Book Club’ on Instagram. She says she really enjoys this project as it allows her to shift the focus from herself and create an online community.

So, what’s next for Maisie? She’s due to support Niall Horan for the majority of the European leg of his ‘Nice to Meet Ya’ tour in 2021, and one of her dreams for the future is to play at The Dome in her hometown of Brighton. A year on from her last EP release in October 2019 (It’s Your Bed Babe, It’s Your Funeral), it surely won’t be long before we hear more ‘emo girl pop’ from Maisie Peters.
