Music Blog : Somebody’s Child ‘Oh Emily’ Review

By Rachel Moorehead

New single ‘Oh Emily’ released on 15th March

Irish alternative band Somebody’s Child are back with a massive one-off release between albums. ‘Oh Emily’ was first played to fans on the band’s sold out UK tour in October 2023.

I’ve been a fan of Somebody’s Child for a while and after seeing them live in Ulster Sports Club in March 2023 I was very excited to hear ‘Oh Emily’. Safe to say, it didn’t disappoint. ‘Oh Emily’ has all the elements to make it an indie rock classic – from the tightly wound guitars to the seriously catchy chorus.

The opening lyrics of the song beautifully detail the conflict of misunderstanding a romantic partner:

‘I said it’s nice to meet you

But my head’s in a cloud and I can’t see (Yeah)

I’m stumbling to my feet and

You said I’m fine but I’m not”.

The lyrics of ‘Oh Emily’ are both beautiful and heart-breaking at the same time. The emotion is brought to life through frontman Cian Godfrey’s stunning vocal. He has described how ‘Oh Emily’ came about when the band were at a very early stage of writing for the second album. The band didn’t quite know where they wanted the song at that stage and ultimately, they decided it belongs in its own place.

I really admire Somebody’s Child for releasing the track as a standalone piece and I can’t wait to hear the sonic progression into the second album.

Somebody’s Child are playing a gig on April 12th in Dublin’s 3 Olympia so make sure you grab a ticket if you haven’t already! As for ‘Oh Emily’ it’s an exciting track sure to get stuck in your head and earn its spot in your playlists.
